Learn to use OnChat

1. Getting Started


Enter the First Timers Help Room: Go to onchat.com. Click on the link on the bottom of the homepage called First Timers Help Room. You will be asked to enter as a guest or a member. Type your name in the "guest" field and click on the "ok" button. Or if you have registered, enter you member username and password and enter the room as a member

Within a minute, you should be in the chat room. The chat room is a picture of a room. You are the smiley image in the room. If the chat room does not load, click here for technical help.

Moving: Click on different areas in the room. Your avatar (the smiley face) will move to the area of the room where you click.

Or, click your avatar and drag it to where you want to go.

Talking: Type "hello" and hit the enter key . Your smiley face will say "hello".

Tip: Dont know what to say? Ask lots of questions.

Change rooms: move the mouse over the door called "start chatting". The door will light up. Click on the door and you will change rooms. This is called a "room link". Most rooms in OnChat have links to other rooms.

Emoticons

Emoticons help you show feelings in OnChat. Click on an emoticon and the image will appear next to your avatar. After a few seconds, it will dissappear.

Chat Log

Click on the "Chat Log" button for a history of what has been said. A window will pop up. Click the "Chat Log" button again and the window will dissappear.

Change Avatars

Click on the "Change Avatar" button. The avatar window will pop up. Select a new avatar, and click on the "preview" button. When you find an avatar you like, click on the "ok" button.

Note: To paint or upload your own avatars, you need to become a member.

Shout and Think

There are different kinds of text balloons you can use. Type something, and then click on the "!" or "{}" buttons next to the text input bar.

! means shout
{} means whisper

Hot Spots

The "Hot Spots" button will show you rooms that are popular. Click on the "Hot Spots" button, and then click on a room you would like to visit.

Text Bar

To move the textbar from the top to the bottom of the page, click the "Text Bar" button located on the upper left of the page.

Paint

The Paint Button lets you paint on some of the background areas in OnChat.  In main street, for example, you can write on the book.
To use, click on the paint button.  A spray can will appear next to your avatar.  Paint by clicking and dragging the mouse across the background.  When you are done, click on the paint button again to turn it off.

Note:  If you enter OnChat's "First Timers helproom" as a guest, paint will be dismantled.
Tip: When you are done painting, make sure you turn paint off or you will not be able to move.

 

3. Advanced Stuff

This section covers: Text and Balloon Color | Throw | Search | Whisper | Whisper On/Off | Ignore.

Text and balloon color

Changing the color of your text gives you some individuality and can make a conversation easier to follow.
    To change the color of your text type \color, hit enter. Then type text..
    To change the color of your text balloon, type \\color, hit enter. then type text..
For example, to say hello in red, type \red and hit the enter key. Then type hello in the textbar.
The colors you can use are red, green, blue, pink, gray, and black and white.

The Throw Function

Want to invite someone to your room? Type \throw username:roomname and a temporary link button will appear in the room.  Even easier, click on the search button, find the room you are looking for, and click on the "*" next to the room name.  The link button will appear.

Search

Search helps you find user rooms. Click on the "search button" in the upper left and the search window will open. Type a username or a keyword and click on the search button. When the search is complete, click on the room you want, or click the "*" next to the room. This will "throw" a temporary button in the chat room that leads to the new room.

Whisper

To chat with someone one on one, click on their avatar and select "whisper". Type your message.

Click "All" to discontinue whispering.

Whisper On/Off

Tired of people whispering to you?  Click on "my info" and select the "Ignore whisper" checkbox.

Ignore People

Is someone bothering you?  Click on the person's avatar and select the ignore button.
