How
do I start chatting?
- Go to OnChat.
- Click on "First
Time"
- Enter a nickname and click "enter".
- Once the room is done loading, type your message where it says:
"<Type here. Hit Enter when done.>"
How
do I move in the chatroom?
Take your cursor, point and click on the destination you wish to move
to.
Or, click your avatar and drag it to where you want to go.
How
do I change rooms?
Some areas of the chatroom will light up. You can click on these links.
These links will either lead to another room or to a webpage.
How
do I whisper?
To whisper, click on the avatar of the person you wish to whisper
to.
Select the option "whisper". Type your message.

You must be at least 13 years old to become a member of OnChat.
Each community has its own rules. If you make your own rooms, you
rules apply to your room.
Many communities have volunteer moderators that help enforce the
rules. If you dont like how they run things, go to a different community.
Adult themed rooms MUST be marked adult or your account may be terminated.

What
is an avatar?
An avatar is a character that represents yourself in the chatroom.
How
to upload an avatar?
You must be a member
of OnChat to upload a custom avatar.
Make sure your avatar is 120x120 pixels or smaller. To change your
avatar size, use an image manipulation tool like Photoshop.
- Go to OnChat, on the homepage, enter your username and password
in "Member Login".
- In your My OnChat page, click "My Avatars"
- Then click on "Avatar Upload" and select "Browse"
- Select your saved avatar and click "Open"
- Click the"Upload".
How
to use OnChat's Avatar
Exchange.
- Make sure your are logged in as a member.
- Click the link "Avatars"
- Find an avatar you like, and click it. Select "add this avatar
to my collection".
Where
can I find avatars?
You can find many avatars on either our Avatar
Exchange or on the net by searching for "Avatars".
How
do I download an avatar?
An avatar on the net can be downloaded by clicking the right button
on your mouse. Select "save image as..." and save it to
your desktop.
How
do I create my own avatar?
- Click on "my Avatars" in your memberpage.
- Click the link "Create a new avatar". This will open
an avatar pain program in your browser. Use the tools to paint your
avatar. Click the disk icon to save your avatar.
Become a member
and create your avatar now!

How
do I create my own chatroom?
- Go to My OnChat.
- Click on the link marked "My Rooms".
- Click on the link marked "Create a Room". Name your
room and select a background image.
How
do I upload a different background?
- Go to "My OnChat". Click "My Rooms" and select
a room to edit.
- Click "View/Upload" and select "Upload new Background
image"
- Click "Browse", find your background image, click "open".
- Click "upload".
Make sure that your saved background image is
540x385 pixels and 40k or smaller.
How
do I use the Object Editor(s)?
The Object Editor helps you put room links and web links into your
chat room.
- Go to "My Rooms" in your OnChat account.
- Select a room to edit and click "Object Editor v2.0"
- From there, you can do things like add room links and webpage
links.
How
do you lock your room?
- Go to "My OnChat". Click on "My Rooms".
- Select a room to edit. Click on "lock room".
- Once your room is locked, type the usernames of the users you
wish to have access to enter your room.
I
forgot my password
It
says I got the wrong password, when I know it's correct.
Please make sure you got the correct username as well as the password.
Remember to not use any caps on your username.
Using
OnChat with AOL
OnChat does not work well with some versions of AOL. Please try running
Microsoft Internet Explorer outside of AOL. To do this:
1. log onto the Internet with AOL.
2. start Internet Explorer from the startbar on your computer.
Using
OnChat with Web TV
Sorry, our avatar chat does not work with Web TV or Sega Dreamcast.
You could however use our new HTML chat, to go there, click
here.
Using
OnChat with Mac
OnChat does not work well with older Macintosh systems. OnChat uses
a computer language called Java, which does not work well on a Mac.
Mac OS 8.6 has a much improved version of Java. Please consider upgrading.
Setting
up your browser to accept all cookies
Using Netscape:
On your menu bar, click on "Edit" and scroll down to "Preferences".
On your Preferences page, on the left, click on "Advance".
Then on the right click where it says "Accept all cookies".
Using Internet Explorer:
On your menu bar, click on "Tools" and scroll down to "Internet
Options".
On your Internet Options page, click on "Advance".
Then scroll down to "Cookies" and set up your browser to
accept all cookies.
Fixing
the most common problem
Sometimes fixing a problem can be as easy as restarting your computer,
and going back to OnChat.
